Underinsured Motorist CoverageFebruary 2, 2018 The minimum amount of automobile liability insurance a person must carry in Kentucky is only $25,000. If you or a family member is involved in a serious accident due to the negligence of another, it is possible your personal injury claim could greatly exceed the limits of liability insurance of the other driver. That is why you want to purchase Underinsured Motorist Coverage, also known as UIM coverage. A prior article discussed Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM), which is different than UIM coverage. UM coverage will apply when the other driver has no insurance. UIM coverage will apply if the other driver does not have enough insurance to cover your claim. Like UM coverage, you need to purchase this as a part of your own policy. This type of coverage is traditionally not expensive, and like UM coverage is additional protection for you and your family. So look at your policy and be sure you have purchased both UM and UIM coverages. You can never tell what coverage another driver will have. CATEGORIES: Insurance Law |
